Bhutanese Boy Has a Successful Thoracic Operation For A Foreign Body In Left Lower Lung

Feb 14, 2023 to Feb 14, 2023

A 6-year-old boy, Tenzin from Bhutan came to us following an unsuccessful attempt at the removal of a betel nut from the left lower lobe lung. He had accidentally inhaled the betel nut 3months ago.

He was referred to the cardiothoracic unit of Fortis Anandapur on February 14, 2023, with severe cough, pneumonia, and lower respiratory tract infection. He underwent an HR-CT chest on arrival at Kolkata and following which a Bronchoscopy was done under GA. Since the foreign body was embedded in the left lower lobe lung for more than 3 months, it had fibrosed the bronchus and collapsed the left lower lobe lung with Bronchiectatic changes (constrictions and inflammation in the bronchus). He underwent a successful left lower lobectomy procedure under Dr. KM Mandana’s team and was discharged and was discharged on February 23, 2023, back to Bhutan.
