Decoding Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options

Dr. Sujata Datta Mar 18, 2024

Heavy menstrual bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia, is a common gynaecological concern affecting many women. Characterized by excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding, menorrhagia can have various underlying causes and may significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Understanding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding is crucial for effective management and relief.

Causes of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding:

Several factors can contribute to heavy menstrual bleeding, including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometrial cancer, thyroid disorders, blood clotting disorders, and certain medications such as anticoagulants

Diagnosis:

Diagnosing the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding typically begins with a comprehensive medical history and physical examination by a healthcare provider. Additional diagnostic tests may include blood tests to evaluate hormone levels and check for anaemia, pelvic ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries for structural abnormalities, and endometrial biopsy to rule out endometrial cancer or hyperplasia.

Treatment Options:

The choice of treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding depends on the underlying cause, severity of symptoms, and individual preferences. Treatment options may include:

  • Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help reduce menstrual bleeding and relieve pain. Hormonal therapies, including birth control pills, hormonal IUDs (intrauterine devices), and hormonal injections, may regulate menstrual cycles and decrease bleeding.
  • Surgical Interventions: For women who do not respond to medication or have underlying structural issues such as fibroids or polyps, surgical interventions may be recommended. Minimal Invasive Procedures to remove the fibroids or polyps or Laparoscopic or Robotic hysterectomy, which removes the uterus entirely, can effectively treat heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Implementing lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet rich in iron and vitamin C, managing stress, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption can help alleviate symptoms of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Conclusion:

Heavy menstrual bleeding is a common gynaecological condition that can significantly impact a woman's physical and emotional well-being. By understanding the causes, seeking timely diagnosis, and exploring appropriate treatment options, women with heavy menstrual bleeding can effectively manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. If you experience persistent or severe menstrual bleeding, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and personalized treatment recommendations.
