Beat the Heat, Protect Your Kidneys: Navigating the Delhi-NCR Heatwave

Dr. Sanjeev Gulati May 22, 2026

As Delhi-NCR battles relentless temperatures crossing 45°C, the heatwave has become more than just seasonal discomfort—it is a serious health concern. While most people focus on heatstroke and dehydration, one vital organ silently bears the brunt of extreme heat: the kidneys.

Our kidneys play a crucial role in filtering toxins, maintaining fluid balance, and regulating essential minerals in the body. During intense summer heat, excessive sweating leads to dehydration, reducing blood flow to the kidneys and impairing their ability to function efficiently. This increases the risk of kidney stones, urinary infections, and even acute kidney injury.

The situation becomes more challenging in Delhi-NCR due to hot “Loo” winds, rising pollution levels, and hectic urban lifestyles. Many individuals remain unknowingly dehydrated throughout the day, placing continuous stress on their kidneys.
Protecting kidney health during summer requires simple but disciplined habits. Staying hydrated is the first and most important step. Adults should consume adequate fluids throughout the day instead of waiting to feel thirsty. Natural drinks such as coconut water, lemon water, and buttermilk help replenish lost electrolytes and keep the body cool.

People should also pay attention to warning signs such as dark-colored urine, reduced urination, swelling, fatigue, or persistent back pain. Avoiding unnecessary use of painkillers like ibuprofen during dehydration is equally important, as these medicines can further strain kidney function.

Limiting outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and wearing protective clothing can significantly reduce heat-related stress on the body.

The ongoing heatwave reminds us that prevention is always better than cure. By prioritizing hydration and recognizing early symptoms, we can protect our kidneys and overall health until the much-awaited monsoon arrives.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay healthy.
