Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh Launches Dedicated Lung Failure Clinic for Advanced Respiratory Diseases and Transplant Care

Aug 20, 2026 to Aug 20, 2026

Delhi’s dedicated Lung Failure Clinic provides multidisciplinary care for patients with advanced and end-stage lung diseases, including lung transplant evaluation, pulmonary rehabilitation and structured follow-up.

Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh has launched a dedicated Lung Failure Clinic to provide comprehensive, specialised care for patients suffering from advanced and end-stage lung diseases. The clinic brings together pulmonology, lung transplant expertise, respiratory critical care and allied healthcare services to offer patients coordinated, end-to-end management under one roof.

The Lung Failure Clinic at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh will operate every Tuesday and Friday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, providing patients with access to specialised evaluation and personalised treatment planning for progressive and complex respiratory conditions.

The clinic will be led by Dr Vikas Maurya, Senior Director & HOD, Respiratory Medicine and Respiratory Critical Care, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh and Dr Govini Balasubramani, Director, Lung Transplant and Advanced Lung Failure, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai (a Fortis network hospital).

The clinic will provide comprehensive assessment and management for patients with advanced respiratory diseases, including interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary fibrosis, advanced COPD, bronchiectasis, pulmonary hypertension and other conditions resulting in progressive lung failure.

The multidisciplinary approach will focus on timely diagnosis, optimisation of medical treatment and assessment of patients who may benefit from lung transplantation. Patients considered for transplantation will receive structured pre-transplant counselling, detailed clinical evaluation and coordinated care with transplant specialists.

Comprehensive Care for Advanced Lung Disease

The Lung Failure Clinic will provide access to a range of specialised services, including:

  • Comprehensive evaluation of advanced and end-stage lung diseases
  • Assessment and referral for lung transplantation
  • Advanced pulmonary function testing
  • Bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonology procedures
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Nutritional assessment and counselling
  • Sleep evaluation and management
  • Non-invasive ventilation support
  • Respiratory critical care support
  • Patient and caregiver education
  • Structured pre- and post-transplant follow-up

By bringing together specialists from pulmonology, lung transplantation, respiratory critical care, rehabilitation and allied healthcare services, the clinic aims to provide continuity of care across the entire patient journey—from advanced disease evaluation and treatment optimisation to transplant assessment and long-term follow-up.

Double-Lung Transplant Gives 29-Year-Old Physiotherapist a New Lease on Life

The launch of the Lung Failure Clinic comes at a time when Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh has successfully treated patients with advanced and life-threatening lung disease through specialised transplant care.

Recently, a 29-year-old physiotherapist successfully underwent a double-lung transplant at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh after living with progressive interstitial lung disease (ILD).

She was diagnosed with ILD in 2021, a condition characterised by progressive scarring of the lungs. Despite continued medical treatment, her respiratory condition progressively worsened. In 2023, she was hospitalised with severe lung infections and sepsis.

By late 2025, her lung function had deteriorated significantly, and she required continuous oxygen support. Considering the progressive and potentially life-threatening nature of her condition, she was evaluated by a multidisciplinary team for lung transplantation.

After comprehensive assessment and transplant planning, she successfully underwent a double-lung transplant in May 2026 at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh.

The successful case underscores the importance of early referral and timely evaluation at a specialised lung failure centre, particularly for patients with progressive respiratory disease whose condition continues to deteriorate despite optimal medical management.

The dedicated Lung Failure Clinic at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh aims to strengthen access to specialised care for such patients and provide a coordinated pathway for advanced lung disease management, transplant evaluation, rehabilitation and long-term respiratory care.
