Saves 32-Year-Old Pregnant Woman with Severe Abdominal Bleeding Caused by Endometriosis

Faridabad, 13th February 2025: In a rare, reported case, Doctors at Fortis Escorts, Faridabad saved the life of a 32-year-old pregnant woman suffering from severe internal abdominal bleeding due to endometriosis. Endometriosis is a rare chronic condition where tissues similar to the lining of the uterus grow outside the uterus. This condition is associated with hormonal changes involved during pregnancy and chronic inflammation due to endometriosis thus leading to sudden and severe blood loss. Such cases during late pregnancy are extremely rare and complex, occurring in about 1 in 10,000 pregnancies, and pose significant risks to both mother and baby. The team of doctors led by Dr Niti Kautish, Director and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad successfully conducted a challenging procedure in approximately 2.5 hours, and the patient was discharged in a stable condition in 5 days.

Upon admission at the hospital, the woman was 29 weeks pregnant and was suffering from acute lower abdominal pain and recurrent vomiting. Diagnostic tests, including an ultrasound, revealed a Paralytic ileus - a condition in which the intestines temporarily stop working, leading to a blockage in the digestive tract, along with solid cysts in her uterus, due to endometriosis. Post evaluation of the condition and assessment of the risk factors, the team of doctors decided to immediately perform an emergency caesarean section to deliver the baby prematurely, followed by a laparotomy surgery where the left ovary, cysts and the fallopian tube were surgically removed. Both the surgeries performed were successful, thus saving the lives of both mother and baby.

Giving details of the case, Dr Niti Kautish, Director and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “We conducted an emergency laparotomy surgery, that involved making a large incision in the abdominal wall to examine the organs inside and treat the exact source of bleeding. With the help of this procedure, the woman’s left ovary, cysts and fallopian tube were surgically removed to control the profuse abdominal bleeding. The patient initially experienced deterioration in her health condition due to loss of approx. 3.5 litre of blood but was immediately stabilized postoperatively with intensive care and 4 units of blood via transfusions. If the woman was not treated on time, she could have succumbed to hemorrhagic shock, while the fetus was at risk of death due to mother’s unstable condition and delayed delivery.”
