Successfully treats Severe Stroke in 45-Year-Old Male with Advanced Mechanical Thrombectomy
Fortis Escorts Faridabad is the only Hospital in Faridabad with State-of-the-Art Interventional Neurology Infrastructure
Faridabad, 24 February 2025: Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad successfully treated a 45-year-old male, who had suffered ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain. The team of Interventional Neurologists led by Dr Vinit Banga, Director, Neurology & Head Neuro Intervention, Fortis Escorts Faridabad conducted a challenging procedure - Mechanical Thrombectomy (a minimally invasive procedure for removing blood clots from the brain after an ischemic stroke) and revived the patient. The surgery lasted for an hour and after a week, the patient was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition.
The patient was admitted to the emergency ward of Fortis Escorts Faridabad after experiencing sudden weakness on the right side of his body and face, along with inability to speak. Immediately, a CT scan, CT angiography and a CT perfusion were conducted to assess the extent of brain damage and evaluate the occluded blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. The investigations revealed blockages in the major brain artery and significant areas of brain at risk of damage.
After evaluation, it was decided to proceed with immediate brain surgery to prevent extensive and irreversible brain damage, as any delay in surgery could have left the patient bedridden for life. Post the surgery, the patient had a successful recovery and his condition gradually improved.
Giving details of the case, Dr Vinit Banga, Director, Neurology & Head Neuro Intervention, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “We conducted mechanical thrombectomy procedure to treat the patient. In this case, a small needle was inserted in the leg. The needle was threaded with thin tubes (wires, pipes and catheters) which sucked the clots from within the blood vessels. This procedure is relatively complex and precise, needs experienced hands to be performed as any small error can lead to life-threatening hemorrhage in the brain. Any delay in performing the surgery would have led the patient to be ventilator dependent in the ICU and further be bed-ridden.”
"Interventional Neurology has revolutionized stroke treatment, particularly in cases of ischemic strokes, where every minute counts. Mechanical thrombectomy allows us to precisely remove the clot blocking blood flow to the brain, preventing irreversible damages. In this case, the timely intervention not only restored the patient's mobility and speech but also spared him from life-long disability. Such advanced procedures have drastically improved survival rates and quality of life for stroke patients.” Dr Banga added.
Yogendra Nath Awadhiya, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad said, “This case involved a complex and challenging procedure for the patient's survival. However, the team of doctors led by Dr Vinit Banga meticulously handled the case and executed the surgery with great precision and care. Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad is the only hospital in Faridabad offering in-house interventional neurology, ensuring expert, round-the-clock care for stroke, aneurysms, and neurovascular emergencies with precision.”
