Fortis Noida Performs Worlds First Laparoscopic Dual-Lobe Living Donor Liver Transplant_ Saves 51-year-old Kyrgyzstan Patient with End-Stage Liver Disease

In a landmark achievement that pushes the boundaries of liver transplantation, Fortis Hospital Noida has successfully performed what is believed to be the world's first Laparoscopic Dual-Lobe Living Donor Liver Transplant on a 51-year-old man from Kyrgyzstan suffering from end-stage liver disease caused by chronic Hepatitis B infection. The highly complex and life-saving procedure was led by Dr. Vivek Vij, Chairman, Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Sciences, Fortis Hospital Noida, along with a multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, hepatologists, anesthetists and critical care specialists. The patient, who had advanced liver failure with life-threatening complications, has made a remarkable recovery and has been discharged in stable condition. Both living donors—his daughters aged 20 and 21 years—also recovered well and were discharged successfully.

The patient was admitted to Fortis Noida with decompensated chronic liver disease, a severe stage of liver failure characterized by jaundice, recurrent abdominal fluid accumulation and gastrointestinal bleeding. Detailed investigations revealed severe liver damage, hypertension, low platelet counts and impaired blood clotting. Following a comprehensive evaluation, the transplant team determined that a single donor graft would be insufficient to support the patient's body requirements. To overcome this challenge, the team planned a dual-lobe living donor liver transplant using liver grafts from both the daughters. In a first-of-its-kind approach, liver donation surgeries for both donors were performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, resulting in less pain, smaller incisions and faster recovery. The donor surgeries lasted approximately five hours each, while the recipient transplant surgery was completed in nearly eight hours. Giving details of the case, Dr. Vivek Vij, Chairman, Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Sciences, Fortis Hospital Noida said, "This procedure represents a significant advancement in the field of living donor liver transplantation. Dual-lobe liver transplantation itself is technically demanding and performed only in select centres worldwide. Accomplishing it through a completely laparoscopic approach for both donors marks a major milestone in transplant surgery. The minimally invasive technique reduces pain, blood loss, hospital stay and recovery time for donors while maintaining the highest standards of safety. Most importantly, it enabled us to save a patient who otherwise had very limited chances of survival. Without timely transplantation, the patient's condition would likely have progressed to fatal liver failure. This achievement opens new possibilities for patients requiring larger liver graft volumes while simultaneously improving safety and recovery outcomes for living donors.”
