52-Year-Old Male with just 10 percent Heart Function successfully revived at Fortis Greater Noida via High-Risk Emergency Angioplasty

Jul 29, 2026 to Jul 29, 2026

Life-saving intervention restores heart pumping capacity from 10% to 45%, bringing patient back from severe cardiogenic shock to full recovery.

Greater Noida, July 29, 2026: Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, successfully performed a life-saving, high-risk angioplasty on a 57-year-old man, who arrived in critical condition with an Ejection Fraction (EF) (the measure of the heart's pumping capacity) of just 10% to 15%. Following a timely, multi-staged intervention led by the best cardiologist in Greater Noida, Dr. Shantanu Singhal, Consultant Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, the patient's heart pumping capacity improved significantly to 45%, allowing him to make a complete recovery without lingering cardiac symptoms.

The patient arrived at the hospital presenting with severe chest heaviness and shortness of breath since 24 hours. He had a history of uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension and experienced a sudden, life-threatening buildup of fluid in their lungs alongwith episodes of high blood pressure. Doctors had to quickly place the patient on a ventilator support to help him breathe and administer emergency medications to stabilize his blood pressure.

Given that three major heart arteries were severely blocked, acute heart failure, and extremely compromised heart function (EF 10-15%), immediate traditional angioplasty posed a severe risk of sudden cardiac arrest. To mitigate these life-threatening complications, the clinical team first stabilized the patient using an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) – (a mechanical device with a catheter and balloon placed in the aorta to help the heart pump blood) following emergency angiography.

After two days of intensive care, doctors successfully cleared the patient's main blocked artery in a swift 15-minute procedure. He responded immediately to treatment and was successfully weaned off both the ventilator and the heart-assist pump the following day. Within a week, his heart's pumping capacity (ejection fraction) improved significantly from a critical 10% to 35% and following a subsequent procedure, it further increased to 45%, marking a remarkable recovery.

The patient has been discharged and followed up in the outpatient department (OPD). He remains completely asymptomatic with good quality of life, and after completing routine cardiac rehabilitation, he is expected to resume his full professional duties.

Giving details of the case, Dr. Shantanu Singhal, Consultant Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, said, "Treating a patient whose heart was functioning at just 10% while battling fluid-filled lungs and dangerous blood pressure spikes over 200/100 was an extraordinary challenge. By first using a specialized heart-assist pump to stabilize him, we were able to safely perform a quick, low-dye procedure to unblock his artery. The swift action prevented sudden cardiac arrest and led to a remarkable recovery in his heart function."
